I remember this project and then heard nothing for years. It’s an intriguing idea that could be much less environmentally demanding than pumped storage. The very dry desert SW could be a solar powerhouse with thousands of rail batteries on nearby mountains providing on demand energy.

This is in line with the very best that modern hydro storage offers. Depending on location and technology, hydro can be as low as 65%

It was getting tiring to read things like “renewables can’t compete with baseload production because of being intermittent” or “only hydro can solve the intermittent nature of renewables, but you can’t have hydro without having lakes in the neighborhood”.
