Leading the EV Ecosystem Forward in Michigan

Justine Johnson, Michigan’s Chief Mobility Officer and head of the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME), talks with CleanTechnica about how Michigan’s mobility and electrification strategy, guided by the MI Healthy Climate Plan, is innovating and moving the EV ecosystem forward. They are leading the way on some of the cutting-edge EV topics of the day.
“As the mobility leader in the country, Michigan has not only established a robust EV infrastructure, but is growing faster than the national average. Last year, the state increased its number of public DC fast charging stations by 52%. Michigan now boasts nearly 3,000 charging ports, making clean transportation more accessible than ever,” a representative of the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification noted. But it’s not only leading on basic EV infrastructure — it has several innovative, leading project beyond the basics.

One of the topics discussed in the podcast were a wireless inductive roadway project in Michigan, the first in the USA. We have covered that project (see previous link), but you can also learn about it on the Michigan government website. Another project is an autonomous electric shuttle project at Sleeping Bear Dunes. Then there was brief discussion of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and the Advanced Aerial Mobility (AAM) Activation Fund. Other topics were Polaris’ off-road vehicle charging network, the Fresh Coast Maritime Challenge Grant program, and the Mobility Prototype Grant program.

Note that Justine also previously worked on the Los Angeles County Aviation Commission, advising the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on the operations and development of LA’s five airports; was the Director of Member Engagement at the California Mobility Center (CMC); worked at Ford as the Head of Mobility Engagement for the SoCal/Southwest Region; and served as Vice President of Government & Community Relations for the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
